A railway workers strike scheduled for Monday, June 4th, is causing problems with some services being cancelled on Sunday.
José Manuel Oliveira, coordinator of the Federation of Transport and Communications Workers, one of the six unions involved in the strike, said he did not know how many trains had been cancelled, as things were rather unpredictable.
Oliveira said that it's possible that workers on long-haul trips already are on strike as they would have to stay overnight so have not run services that would have left far from home.
The union leader added that, throughout Sunday, "more towards the end of the afternoon" the situation should worsen with many trains cancelled, although the strike only starts at midnight tonight, to hit Monday’s services.
Railway workers at Comboios de Portugal, Medway and Takargo are striking against the future possibility of single driver trains being introduced, rather than a driver and an authorsied backup.
According to the information posted online, Comboios de Portugal states that no minimum service has been defined and that alternative transport will not be laid on.
