VRSA fire - parts of Portugal's railway heritage consumed by flames

TrainTouristNarrowGagueSMALLA railway shed at Vila Real de Santo António station has been badly damaged by fire.

The historic rolling stock inside, two of which were destined for display at the National Railway Museum in Entroncamento, has been severely damaged.

The fire broke out late on Monday afternoon, June 11th, at the railway shed at Vila Real de Santo António station where examples of Portugal’s early locomotive history are stored and worked on.

The fire was extinguished at 18:47 but not until three of the seven railway vehicles that were being stored had been burned completely.

It was not possible to determine in what state the two most important pieces of locomotive history were left in as the interior of the warehouse was gutted and part of the roof had collapsed.
