Belgian national charged with 2016 Messines slaying

messinesAerialA Belgian national of advancing years has been arrested and charged with shooting dead his octogenarian neighbour, after which he went home, burnt the clothes he was wearing and the next day, tried to make the incident look like someone has assaulted her.

The Public Prosecutor's Office last Wednesday ordered the arrest of the 73-year-old Belgian so he could formally be charged with a homicide that dates back to 2016.

According to the prosecutor, "the defendant has admitted to killing an 81-year-old neighbour with a firearm. The facts go back to December 2016 and occurred in the area of São Bartolomeu de Messines, where the defendant and the victim resided."

"There are suspicions that the defendant, due to a dispute, fired several shots at his neighbour, leading to her death. He then returned home and burned the clothes he wore, went back to the victim's house and arranged it to look like an assault," added the prosecutor.

The suspect will remain in custody until brought to trial.
