Alcoutim Council has announced that it has been granted European funding to build a waste water treatment plant in Montes do Rio, thus halting a flow of effluent into the Guadiana river.
The Council will receive up to 85% of the total cost of €200,000 to build the modern plant that will take the sewage from Montinho das Laranjeiras, Laranjeiras, Guerreiros do Rio, Álamo and Cortes da Donas.
The construction of this unit will “contribute to the improvement of the quality of the water to be deposited in the Guadiana river, improving the quality of the river.”
“The pipework, to take sewage to the new plant, already exists so all that is needed is the treatment plant,” said the mayor of Alcoutim Osvaldo Gonçalves.
The work also “will improve the quality of life, well-being and health of the population.”
Gonçalves said that the Council had undertaken to build the treatment plant whatever the outcome of the grant application, but having the contribution is most welcome.
