British girl raped in Albufeira street

albufeiraCrowdA British girl complained that she had been raped in an Albufeira street in the early hours of Tuesday morning, June 26th.

The girl, aged 17, said she was raped by a Britsh man aged 23, who later was tracked down and arrested by GNR special forces after some resistance.

The youngster was assisted at the scene and then taken to the Faro hospital for an examination that proved to be inconclusive. According to the GNR, the crime allegedly occurred in Rua José Fontana, near Avenida Sá Carneiro, the infamous ‘strip.’

The two Britons were in the same group in one of the bars, named by Correio de Manhã as 'Meet' - a popular expat and holidaymakers’ venue, famed for its cocktails. They left the establishment together and when in the street, the boy allegedly tried it on with the girl.

She told police that she resisted but he forced her to have sex with him on the public road.

The GNR received an alert at 04:44 and a patrol immediately went to the scene and spotted the suspect who ran away.  The 23-year-old was chased and caught by members of the GNR’s Public Order Intervention Group which are there to boost security over the summer period.

One of the Group was injured when jumping a fence, in pursuit. When the suspect was caught, he resisted arrest and rather foolishly attacked one of the GNR soldiers.

The Faro Judicial Police was alerted and is investigating the girl’s allegations. The British man, although suspected of rape, was arrested, but for resisting and assaulting a member of the GNR.

In April police in Albufeira arrested a 28-year-old Portugese barman on suspicion of raping a British holidaymaker. He was released on bail pending an ongoing criminal investigation after appearing in a closed court hearing.
