Threatened 'Alagoas Brancas' wetland - date for 'big debate' is set

LagoasBrancasSmallWith the aim of safeguarding and preserving of the Alagoas Brancas freshwater area in Lagoa, a group of citizens, 'Lagoa Naturalmente' (Lagoa Naturally), is inviting the general public and social media to join in a key public debate on July 14th, at 4 pm, at the Convento São José, in Lagoa.

Alagoas Brancas is an important wetland area which, through the year, plays host to hundreds of birds of various species while also acting as a rainwater retention area which reduces the risk of flooding at the nearby Parque das Ferias of FATACIL and the city of Lagoa.

There are plans to build an industrial estate where the wetland now sits, to be used for general trade, services, industry and warehousing. This was approved in 2013 by the Municipality of Lagoa which wanted to see a Continente supermarket built on the site.

At the end of April, a modification to the plan was proposed by Lagoa Council, that ensured the provision of green spaces for public use and parking spaces.

Recently, Parliament approved a Left Bloc/PSD proposal aimed at preserving Alagoas Brancas, as it is.

For the Lagoa debate, Algarve MPs from each political party have been invited, as have the MP from People Animals Nature, members of the Council, of the parishes, from local schools and from the region’s mayors group, AMAL.

Also invited is Almargem, APA-ARH, ICNF, Quercus, SPEA, Lagoa Schools, the Nobel International School of the Algarve and the Parents' Associations of the Lagoa Schools.

As this is such an important topic, Anabela Blofeld, Jorge Ramos, Martin Owen and Tiago Sacramento, from Lagoa Naturalmente, would like invite as many interested parties to attend as possible.
