Ombama returns to Portugal after eight year gap

ObamaBarack Obama returns to Portugal, after an eight year absence, to speak at the ‘Climate Change Leadership Porto 2018 Summit’ on Friday, June 6, at the Porto Coliseum.

The 44th President of the United States will address environmental issues involving climate change, its worldwide impact and the challenged it presents - a subject the former President championed when in office.

Other notable speakers include Mohan Munasinghe, a 2007 Nobel Peace Prize winner and Irina Bokova, a former head of UNESCO in an event organised by the Advanced Leadership Foundation, a North American organisation linked to the US Democratic Party.

Obama is to receive a fee of €500,000, according to Expresso.

The Foundation’s remit is to create a network of global future leaders by equipping them with the necessary skills to benefit their home countries, economies and communities.

The Climate Change Leadership Porto Summit will create a unique convergence of expertise, wisdom and inspiration, bringing together some of the world’s leading scientists and authorities on climate change and the environment.

The choice of Portugal as a venue is particularly interesting at a time when renewable energy production is increasing and Portugal's government is doing its utmost to facilitate an oil and gas industry both onshore and offshore, to the anger and disappointment of environmentalists.

'Remarks by the 44th President of the United States of America' will be moderated by Juan Verde as the former President discusses 'the impacts and challenges of climate changes in the world.'

Who is paying the not insubstantial fee? Is he not wealthy enough to do this out of the goodness of his heart?

Hmm .... Obama is fortunate that he will be guarded for the rest of his life by US Secret Service agents.
That is what you get for being a good president for 2 terms. You know doing the stuff that is required by US presidents of recent times, bombing foreign countries for humanitarian causes while getting the Nobel peace prize, employing Wall street chums to fill in the positions at the cabinet so that you can bail out Wall street banks when the going gets stuff. And now he's going around the world enforcing the hoax that the minuscule amount of carbon dioxide we put into the atmosphere has caused the irreversible climate change. I suppose he has earned that protection from US secret service agents after all.

Nogin the nog,
From what I gather from Portugese friends, Officialdom is not preserved for foreigners only, it is just as difficult for locals to make their way through the bureaucracy. It seems as though, no one in the office is willing to say yes, even if you have produced the correct paperwork and this is very frustrating.

Hmm .... Obama is fortunate that he will be guarded for the rest of his life by US Secret Service agents. So will never encounter the pitfalls laid for us by rogue estate agents, lawyers, accountants and planning officials (to name a few) that so many of us foreigners experience in Portugal.
