Tourist number continue to decline for Algarve hotel sector

HOTELRECEPTIONGALEHoles are starting to appear in the Algarve’s tourism sector as the region's hoteliers’ association confirmed today that nearly 5% fewer tourists came to the region in June this year than last.

The average occupancy rate per room in the Algarve was 79% in June 2018, down 4.5% on the same period last year.

According to the association, the markets with the largest declines were the British, down a worrying 11.2%, and German and Irish tourists, both down 19.7%.

By geographical area, the largest decreases were in Lagos and Sagres, down 14.1% and in Monte Gordo and Vila Real de Santo António, down 12.5%.

Vilamoura, Quarteira and Quinta do Lago registered an increase of 7.1%.

The region’s main tourist area, Albufeira, registered a decline of 3.9%.

Those that did come, spent more on their accommodation, up 2.1% in June compared to last year.

Since the beginning of the year, room occupancy rates have fallen by 2.1% but turnover has increased by 3.7%.

:sigh: it’s a blip. Some of the Brits who only want cheap beer and food are heading back to Turkey and Egypt. They are welcome to effectively be supporting the dodgy political regimes there.

There are 2 theories about English-Irish-Scottish tourists: some areas (like Albufeira) focus quasi exclusively on the low budget tourists of these countries. One of the reasons is that the majority of the bar holders also come from these countries. On the other hand "nice hotels" and "better B&B" or "super deluxe AL" avoid by all means these tourists as in fact their main occupation is drinking-drinking and drinking and as such they provake problems all kinds plus substantial breakage. Therefore this category of accomodations ask higher prices 'as a kind of a natural selection" into the toiurist groups.

Jack Reacher: speaking of "imagination" - as the grandchildren like Dolphins etc every year we had to go to Zoomarine. Last year (after their 8th visit) the children insisted we should NEVER go back to Zoomarine…. as it is ALWAYS THE SAME SHOW and some animals become "very old now"....

Let's face it the Algarve doesn't exactly have much on offer for the 90 days of the year when it's busy here. Crowded beaches, too hot for golf and too expensive to go and wallow in an aqualand park. The Algarve has zero imagination and the tourists know that.

Quoting Nigel Anteney-Hoare:
Algarve is too expensive for many uk people. There are other comparable but cheaper options for them.

Portuguese tourism is still no where near offering a full spectrum of variation. Much of it, such as in the authorised hotel sector at different price bands is very samey as in the rest of the Med. for that price band. There are still apparently thousands of unauthorised apartment lets and in rural areas unauthorised camping sites. Foreigners wanting to enter the latter as authorised still being told "Its quickest and simplest to not take in more than 6 guests on any single parcel of land and if anyone does ask say these are your olive pickers. Otherwise, this is Portugal and you are not Portuguese; so expect your grand children to be growing old, still waiting to get full authorisation."

hmm
There has been a worrying trend for many years concentrating on the number of visitors and not the quality of visitors, The Algarve is not the Costa,s.. IT IS MUCH MORE..
