A daring gang has broken through a wall at a Post Office sorting office and robbed the safe of €5,000.
A Post Office depot on an industrial estate in Portimão was robbed over the weekend but such was the stealth of the gang members, nothing was spotted until 06:00 on Monday morning despite there being an obvious hole in the exterior wall.
A source at the Public Security Police said it is impossible to know when the robbery took place as it was only detected when staff returned to work after the weekend.
The robbers made a hole in the outer wall of the Portimão CTT depot, sufficient for a slim crook to squeeze through. This gave them direct access to the safe from which they removed about €5,000 in cash.
The operation has been described by police as 'surgical' as the hole was small and unobtrusive, with the crooks knowing exactly where best to break in to gain access to the safe.
The PSP spokesman added that, "The number of people involved is unknown, because it was not possible to record images of the robbery."
