Culatra Telemedicine Station links locals to mainland

stethascopeThe Loulé Hospital Group has set up a Telemedicine Station on Culatra Island so locals can talk to a Doctor without waiting for a ferry.

The new Telemedicine Station is linked to an emergency service at the International Clinic of Olhão based at Ria Shopping.

Those wishing to consult a doctor online first get to talk to a nurse who then can furnish the doctor with the patient's record and symptoms.

The doctor can talk to the patient through a computer or smart phone.

With this pilot project, unprecedented in Portugal, the private sector Loulé Hospital Group intends to help overcome difficulties that some residents face in getting urgent consultations.

The settlement of Culatra, is on the eponymous island in the Ria Formosa Natural Park where around 750 residents are to be found.
