Heat limits ticket sales on Portugal's long-distance trains

tgvPortugal’s railway company has limited the sale of tickets for various Alfa Pendular and Intercity trains if these were on routes through baking hot areas of the country.

The company explained its policy was to limit the number of people on board so that those with tickets could have a comfortable temperature in which to travel.

The company said the current heatwave and record temperatures, "are seriously affecting the railway operation," and that the heat had led to problems with refrigeration units.

There have been signal problems too, resulting in trains remaining stationary in 40+°C temperatures, which, "combined with the temperatures inside the carriages have cause high levels of discomfort for passengers."

The company will continue to make efforts to, "continue the passenger transport service with the least possible discomfort in these exceptional circumstances."
