Two earthquakes, measuring 3.9 and 3.3 on the Richter scale, centered in an area about 65 kilometers from Sines were recorded on Monday at seismic stations on the mainland.
The strongest of the two was felt in Lisbon and as far south as Faro.
According to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), the first earthquake, with magnitude 3.9 on the Richter scale, was registered at 06.52 this morning with epicenter about 65 kilometers west-southwest of Sines in the Setúbal district.
The second earthquake, 3.3 on the Richter scale, was registered at 06:58 hours at the same location.
Speaking to the Lusa news agency, seismologist Fernando Carrilho said that the first earthquake - the strongest - did not cause any injuries or material damage and was felt first in the region of Arruda dos Vinhos in the district of Lisbon."
According to Carrilho, from the seismology and geophysics department of the IPMA, this earthquake was also felt in Odemira in the lower Alentejo and Odeceixe in the Algarve.
Last Sunday, an earthquake measuring 2.0 on the Richter scale was recorded at 22.30 hours near Góis, in the Coimbra district.
The earthquakes are classified according to their magnitude as micro (less than 2.0), very small (2.0-2.9), small (3.0-3.9), slight (4.0-4.9 ), moderate (5.0-5.9), strong (6.0-6.9), large (7.0-7.9), significant (8.0-8.9), exceptional (9, 0-9,9) and extreme (greater than 10).
Portugal 1755 earthquake is estimated to have has a magnitude of 9 on the Richter scale.
The world's largest recorded earthquake was on May 22, 1960 near Valdivia, in southern Chile. It was assigned a magnitude of 9.5 by the United States Geological Survey.
