The famous tiles from Santa Monica in Goa, along with rare C16th gold tiles and many other fine examples, will be on display in an exhibition starting on October 20th when, 'From Faro to Goa: a trip through the tiles of Ramalho Ortigão' will be launched in the Municipal Museum of Faro.
Faro Council commented that the exhibition is a chronological and geographical route for the main tiles acquired by the distinguished Naval officer, Ramalho Ortigão, which seem to have been languishing in the museum vault since the 1960s.
This exhibition is the result of research by Alexandre Pais and Constança Azevedo from the National Tile Museum in Lisbon, as well as Marco Lopes from Faro’s Municipal Museum.
A book has already been published by Faro Council with the help of the Montepio Foundation. ‘António Ramalho Ortigão and the Tile Collection of the Municipal Museum of Faro,’ received an Honorable Mention in the SOS Prize under the category of Research in Art History.
The collection of tiles built up by Ramalho Ortigão, dating from the 16th to the 20th centuries, was offered in June 1963 to Faro Council’s municipal museum by the descendants of the well-travelled Naval officer.
"From Faro to Goa: a trip through the tiles of Ramalho Ortigão" will be open to the public until February 10, 2019, and can be visited from Tuesday to Friday, between 10:00 and 18:00 and Saturdays and Sundays, between 10:30 and 17:00, in the Municipal Museum of Faro.
The Infante Dom Henrique Archaeological Museum (Municipal Museum of Faro) is housed in the former convent of Nossa Senhora da Assunção just behind the Cathedral in the old walled city.
The Museum's permanent exhibits include pottery, paintings and a Roman mosaic from the third century depicting Oceanus, the God of the Sea, which was discovered in 1926 and covered over until 1976 when it was discovered for a second time and preserved in the museum.
