About 60,000 customers in the Central region were without power late on Monday afternoon due to the storm that hit late on Saturday evening.
Power company, EDP, said that "the number of consumers without energy continues to decrease compared to the peak of more than 300,000 yesterday morning, currently standing at about 60,000 customers, mostly located in the district of Coimbra and in the area of Louriçal, Pombal."
EDP Distribution has more than 750 employees on the ground identifying "the most critical situations, with a view to implementing measures such as the installation of generators."
"The situation for reconnections has developed positively and there are still about 71 high and medium voltage lines classified as inoperative, with damaged poles, particularly in the localities supplied by the Louriçal and Soure substations," according to the statement.
The passage of Hurricane Leslie through central and northern Portugal, by which time is was classified as a tropical storm, caused 28 injuries and two deaths.
The district most affected by Leslie was Coimbra, where the storm’s erratic route hit hard. In Figueira da Foz, a gust of wind reached 176 kilometers per hour on Saturday night, the highest recorded in Portugal, according to the weather service.
