Alvor paraglider died after stunt went wrong

INEM125An acrobatic manoeuver carried out by experienced pilot, Eduardo Ferreira, caused his own death when his powered paraglider crashed.

The accident happened on May 20, 2018. Ferreira, 49, died on impact near the football ground in Alvor, Portimão.

The Bureau of Aircraft Accident Prevention and Investigation (GPIAAF) has revealed that one of the factors that contributed to the accident was the execution of "near-ground stunts."

The investigation concluded that the accident most likely was caused by the wing hitting the ground during a tight turn to the left, throwing the powered paraglider out of control.

The GPIAAF technicians stated that contributing factors to the accident were "acrobatics near the ground with the execution of steep maneuvers," as well as the "insufficient height" to recover from a descent, "after a failure in the estimation of the trajectory of approach to the ground."

No mechanical or structural problems were detected. The engine "was under significant power at the time of impact."

The autopsy determined that Eduardo Ferreira "died instantly of extensive general traumatic injuries due to the impact."

Accident prevention The GPIAAF points out that this "report has been prepared, for the purpose of accident prevention only."
