Four of Portugal's hotels win Excellence Awards

tivoliFour Portuguese hotels are among the winners of the Condé Nast Johansens 2019 Excellence Awards covering the UK, Ireland, Europe and the Mediterranean zone.

Hotel Infante Sagres in Porto won the Best New or Renovated Hotel, the Tivoli Carvoeiro was considered Best for Families, the Santiago de Alfama Hotel in Lisbon was the Best Urban Hotel, and Terra Nostra Garden Hotel in the Azores, received the Readers' Award.

The prizes were based on online votes, guest ratings and local experts' reports for recommended hotels on the website and in the brand's latest guides.

Condé Nast Johansens believes that, "our world-renowned Awards for Excellence are a trusted mark of quality recognised by consumers and travel professionals alike."

The Tivoli in Carvoeiro reopened in April 2017 after the company was purchased by a Thai group and extensively refurbished.

After the five-month refurbishment, the Tivoli Carvoeiro ended up with fewer, but larger rooms with sea view balconies. For the off-season corporate market, a conference area was added with seven rooms to a capacity to 900 people.

Tivoli Hotels & Resorts' 12 hotels in Portugal and two in Brazil, were put up for sale in 2014 by Rioforte Investments SA, part of the failed Espírito Santo Group, before a court in Luxembourg declared Rioforte bankrupt after the company failed to meet debt payments.

The Tivoli chain now is wholly owned by the Minor Hotel Group with 14 Tivoli hotels (two of them in Brazil) being added to a network of over one hundred hotels in 22 countries.
