Alcoutim: Martim Longo hosts 11th Country Fair this weekend

partridgeAlcoutim’s Partridge Fair, to be held at Martim Longo on November 10th and 11th, now is in its 11th year and appeals to those of the hunting, fishing and shooting fraternity.

The Council and ADECMAR - Cultural Ethnographic Development Association of Martim Longo, have organised the event at the Martim Longo Municipal Sports Pavilion.

The Secretary of State for Forestry and Rural Development, Miguel Freitas, will be opening the event on Saturday 10th.

There is a wide range country activities such as falconry, exhibitions of game species, various competitions, greyhound racing, a horse show and a strange tasting event, entitled ‘Talega do Caçador – O pior do porco.’

As can be expected, there will be plenty of hearty food, mostly involving dead animals.

The festival programme does list music, which will be headlined on Saturday by the inimitable Augusto Canário at 10:00 p.m., and on Sunday will feature the Brasa Doirada quartet, performing traditional Alentejo and other rustic songs, from 5:30 p.m.

The fair is dedicated to hunting in general but is called the partridge fair as this bird is particularly common in the area region, despite having suffered a marked decline across Spain and Portugal.

The fair area is free to enter.
