A crane has toppled into the sea at the end of the jetty, the molhe grande, at Vila Real de Santo António.
According to information released on Thursday by the National Maritime Authority, the crane was involved in the maintenance and repair work that is taking place.
For, as yet unexplained reasons, the crane tipped over into the sea on the beach side of the jetty, not into the shipping channel, on Monday. Nobody was hurt in the accident.
The Authority added that, over the next few days, it hopes a rescue operation can be mounted to right the crane and, if still in working order, that it can continue with its work.
