António Damião, the man caught on video as he stabbed a man at the Forum Algarve shopping centre on 21 November, will be held in custody until his trial date.
According to the Public Prosecutor's Office, the victim is Damião’s landlord who had been demanding the payment of rent arrears.
The Prosecutor’s Office stated that, "there is suspicion that the defendant, after having threatened to kill the offender, his landlord, struck several blows with a curved, sickle-like knife, trying to kill him."
The attacker also is suspected of, "on several occasions, having been upset with people he met, threatened them and, in some cases, even attacked them."
Damião is a former security guard in Faro and was sentenced in 2008 to eight years, eight months in prison for cocaine dealing.
The video of the attack ended up on social media.
The attacker is seen to be holding a knife with which he stabbed his victim in the back.
The attack took place near the Santa Claus Village at the busy shopping centre. Several children were gathered in the area and witnessed the violent assault.
