Eight dead and 18 seriously injured in Operation Ano Novo

inemRoad accidents claimed the lives of eight people over the New Year break, according to GNR figures from 28th December onwards.

In addition to traffic accidents, in figures to 08:00 this morning, the GNR inspected 28,460 drivers and found 458 of them were over the alcohol limit - 167 were so drunk that they were arrested.

The GNR also detained 67 people for driving without legal authorisation.

Operation Ano Novo resulted in 7,629 road traffic offences, notably for speeding (2,930), lack of vehicle inspection certificates, (388) and lack of or incorrect use of a seat belt or child restraint system (343).

The GNR also detected 262 vehicles with problem lighting and signalling systems and fined 233 drivers for driving along and chatting on their mobile phones.

Around 3,000 GNR personnel were engaged in nationawide road patrols, peaking on New Year’s Eve at access roads to towns where celebrations were taking place.

Quoting Tbr:
On the morning of the first we followed a car that was weaving all over the place, crossing the central lines.
This was on the 125 between Lagoa and Portimao.
The driver obviously still under the influence from the night before.
Had the road been busy the consequences could have been horrific.
Early morning checks on drunk drivers. can be just as effective as those in the evening

In today's world when a driver is weaving on the road it is hard to say whether he/she is under the influence of alcohol or under the influence of a mobile phone.
No tolls = less idiot drivers driving on the 125 = less chance of accidents from these idiot drivers.

Has nothing, nothing to do with the tolls.

All the more tragic reasons why the Algarve tolls should be scapped.
