Silves Orange Festival starts on Feb 15th

oranges2The 'Silves - Capital of Oranges' festival, on February 15, 16 and 17, has attracted over 70 exhibitors, related to oranges, wine, agriculture, regional products, confectionery, handicrafts and gastronomy, as well as exhibitors from various local associations and regional bodies.

Silves is the nation’s citrus capital and a series of conferences, in which national and international experts will discuss topics central to citrus producers, is backed up by an events programme including Cuca Rosetta, António Zambujo and Fole Percussion on the three evenings of the show.

National TV station, RTP, will broadcast its ‘Aqui Portugal’ programme on the Saturday.

In the Algarve, an average of between 250,000 and 300,000 tons of oranges are produced each year, with the Silves municipality home to about 40% of the production area.

In total, 2,200 local farmers produce the crop on a production area of ​​6,000 hectares, just over a third of the total citrus growing areas in the country.
