Portimão Council to spend €1 million on wooden walkway

portimaocamaraPortimão Council intends to spend the suspiciously round figure of €1 million of ratepayers’ money on replacing a wooden walkway at Praia da Rocha.

The announcement was made by the Mayor, Isilda Gomes, at a recent session of the Municipal Assembly during which discussions were held on the general state of the Council area.

Isilda Gomes presented a list of the main works with which the Council intends to announce during this election year, focusing on vote-winning areas such as accessibility and public spaces.

The mayor justified the walkway decision, was because the current one is unable economically to be repaired.

Gomes did not give a deadline for the execution of the work, only that it will not start before the coming summer season so as not to upset tourist flow and that the tender has not gone out yet - in fact this could take several months.

Have said it before, Algarve is the forgotten region of Portugal.

This is the council that couldn't afford to mow the grass of 6 roundabouts so advertised offered advertising for free maintenance, same council whose only children's park in the town is in falling to bits and skate park is a death trap, same council who haven't put water in the big fountain at the end of Rua 25 de Abril over 7 years cause they apparently can't afford to fix the pump, same council that is responsible for road maintenance along road from Continente to Penina what feels like your in a third world country because of potholes. Will Isilda eat the receipt for the boardwalk when auditors come calling, like her predecessor? Portimao council is a disgrace.

Election time and it all becomes predictable and little will happen. Season starts soon; it makes no sense whatsoever. Isilda Gomas should get her act together during winter months so everything gets done before Easter.

Walkway paved in gold. What council spends this kind of dosh on wasteful beach pavements...
