Development projects in the Algarve, that are under construction or being started and which have been subject to an environmental impact assessment, are being audited.
This process is designed to verify that developers have been following the environmental rules.
Around 45 projects have been selected for detailed analysis, a process that started in August 2018 and will be completed by the end of July this year.
The CCDR points out that the results of the audits, "may justify the imposition of additional measures to minimise or compensate for significant and unanticipated negative impacts or to sanction any rule breaking."
These environmental post-assessment audits are carried out by independent verifiers qualified by the Portuguese Environment Agency.
