The Algarve is distinguished as 2020’s best golf destination in the world

best golf destinationThe Algarve has been distinguished by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO) as 2020’s best golf destination in the world, adding to the region’s vast collection of accolades and growing recognition worldwide.

The latest award was announced yesterday and distinguishes the region as the World's Best Golf Destination for 2020.

The International Golf Tour Operators Association (IAGTO), which represents the global golf tourism industry, highlighted the Algarve’s golf prestige as part of the 20th IAGTO Awards.

In a poll taken by over 700 tour operators, specializing in this industry and coming from over 60 different countries, the Algarve stood out as a common favourite when it comes to offering the best experience for tourists who practice this sport, winning over a host of other world-class golf destinations.

This is the third time that the Algarve has been distinguished by IAGTO, having won the slightly lesser distinction in 2006 and 2014 of Best Golf Destination in Europe.

In this year's awards ceremony, the Algarve regained the preference of the specialized operators, but now globally, having won the largest number of votes.

Among the many factors that made it possible to reach the top of the vote are the quality and diversity of the Algarve's golfing facilities, ease of access to the destination through frequent connections to Faro airport, and cost/benefit ratio.

Added to this are other selection factors such as the wide range of accommodation options, the natural beauty of the region, the pleasant weather that allows golf to be played throughout the year, and the huge variety of attractions and additional motivations that make the stay culturally richer for the players visiting the region in the company of family and friends.

The award was presented yesterday to João Fernandes, president of Turismo do Algarve, who revealed that he was very proud to receive the award on behalf of all who work in the Algarve’s golf tourism industry, also expressing gratitude to IAGTO and all operators and tourists who voted for the destination.

"Not only is the Algarve a must-see place for the amateur golfer, it has attracted the best professionals in the world as a result of the diversity and renowned quality of the 40 golf courses and the renowned hospitality and professionalism of the region's agents."

“Golf holidays in the Algarve remain in the memory of golfers even after the end of their holidays! It is a land of multiple charms, the Algarve has history, tradition, good weather, nature, good gastronomy, and something that cannot be explained. Therefore, we hope to receive more lovers of the sport very soon.

“We invite everyone to get to know the Algarve next week, as the Portugal Masters 2019 (part of the European Tour), will take place from the 23rd to 27th of October in Vilamoura”.

In the words of Peter Walton, President of IAGTO, “the Algarve has always put the golfing visitor experience at the top of its agenda, and for this reason I would like to congratulate all golf courses, hotels and tourism service providers for this extraordinary achievement.”

Quoting graziano :
"The Algarve is distinguished as 2020’s best golf destination in the world"... Is that a reason to rejoice?!? I find it very sad - we have more than enough of those wealthy and arrogant golf players, now being "the best destination in the world" we surely will attract some more - simply awful!
Sometime people ask me if I play golf - here is my answer: "Are you joking? I'm still sexually very active!"

Wow, only two "thumbs down"? I'm quite disappointed, I was expecting a lot more poor golf players would uprise and protest! Low energy maybe...?

I realise the golfing industry puts a lot of food on plates, and golf tourism is less cyclical than other forms, BUT how much water is needed to maintain these courses?I know some courses use recycled water, and it would be interesting to know how many. We can´t continue with these extreme droughts . I am a gardener,a succulent grower mainly, but when I read that even the olive trees are under stress, I was worried. A balance must be struck.
