Maritime authorities in Portugal and Spain are conducting searches to find a man who disappeared on Sunday in the Guadiana River, in Castro Marim municipality. The causes of the mans disapperance "are still being investigated."
The captain of the port of Vila Real de Santo António told the Lusa news agency that the cause of the disappearance, at about 4 pm on Sunday, near the town of Foz de Odeleite, a river that flows into the Guadiana, is as yet unknown.
Two men who accompanied the missing man "spending the day in the area" and "doing recreational fishing" raised the alarm.
It seems the missing man somehow ended up in the water and was no longer seen.
The searches were suspended at dusk on Sunday and resumed this morning, around 7:00 am.
On the Portuguese side, a vessel from the Vila Real de Santo António lifeboat station and another from the Maritime Police are participating in the operations, while the Civil Protection of Castro Marim are also going to put some means on land. The Spanish maritime rescue also involved a vessel and the Spanish Navy also said it was going to engage a patrol, because the river is 'international', which means both countries are involved in the search.
