Covid-19: 66% of the Algarve population has complete vaccination

COVID-19: 66% OF THE ALGARVE POPULATION HAS COMPLETE VACCINATIONMore than 66% of Portugal residents, 6.7 million people, have completed their vaccination program against Covid-19, revealed the weekly report of the General Directorate of Health (DGS) yesterday.

According to the vaccination report, as of Sunday 6.76 million people (66%) had completed vaccination and 7.79 million (76%) have taken at least one dose of vaccine. The most recent data from the vaccination campaign covers the inoculation of people aged 16 and over.

In Portugal, the vaccination campaign against Covid-19 began on December 27th, 2020, and consists of using single-dose (Janssen) and double-dose (Pfizer/BioNTech, Moderna and AstraZeneca) vaccines.

The Alentejo and Central regions of Portugal continue to have the most advanced vaccination process, respectively with 69% and 68% of the population with the complete vaccination cycle, followed by the Algarve, Madeira and North, all with 66%.

Azores and Lisbon and Vale do Tejo, respectively with 63% and 64% of the population fully vaccinated, are the regions furthest behind in the process. The DGS points out that, in the case of the Azores, the data "may be underestimated", since there was a "delay between the administered vaccines and their registration".

Older people, who started being vaccinated earlier, are among the most immunised, with 90% (50-64 years) to 97% (65 years onwards) now with full vaccination.

The younger age groups, which started to be vaccinated later, are the ones that have progressed the most lately: in those aged 25-49, 70% of people already have the complete vaccination cycle and 83% have at least one dose. Regarding young people between 18 and 24 years, 30% have completed the vaccination and 54% have started the process.

The report also takes in to account the teens aged 16 to 17, of which 152,292 (9%) have now had the first dose of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine and 3,780 their second/complete dose. This is a huge jump - in the previous report just 10,178 young people between 16 and 17 years old (with high risk diseases ) had been vaccinated with one dose. This vast increase, registered in just one week, comes after the mass vaccination campaign carried out last weekend.

Portugal has received 15.3 million doses of vaccines and distributed 14.0 million throughout the territory.

In the country, since the beginning of the pandemic, in March 2020, 17,584 people have died and 1,006,588 cases of infection have been registered, according to this latest bulletin from the DGS.
