The City Museum in Lisbon is the home for Europe's first rotating vertical vegetable garden measuring six metres high, with close to 900 plants, enough to feed 40 people a day.
The idea was developed by a Portuguese startup and is the first of a project that aims to reduce the ecological footprint of food production, giving10 x higher yields, 50% less energy used, 50% less labour and using 90% less water.
"For us the most important thing is that we are growing locally. There is no packaging, transport, we do not use pesticides. The food only has to travel a few metres to reach the plate, therefore, it reduces the environmental impact and increases the nutritional value" , said Bruno Lacey, Chief Operating Officer at Upfarming.
