A plane was seen dropping drugs on the A26, in Ferreira do Alentejo, and then disappeared from radars, according to TVI/CNN Portugal.
The plane is reported to have come from North Africa and was detected by the Air Force, which gave the order to land at Beja airport, however they lost track of it.
According to the daily newspapers, two bales of hashish were thrown from the plane and promptly collected by awaiting drug dealers and loaded into a vehicle.
GNR were alerted to a car parked on the side of the A26 by a driver who passed by and saw the release of the bales. On arrival, the GNR chased the group, who dropped the packages of hashish and fled on foot.
None were caught, so no arrests have yet been made.
The Judiciary Police is now investigating this case further.
