Yesterday, Faro council announced that it will invest more than €550,000 to instal video surveillance cameras across the city, in “high risk locations”, to prevent crimes and repress road violations.
The contract for the installation of a total of 32 cameras, of four different types, was awarded last March. The cameras will be operated and monitored by the Public Security Police (PSP), 24 hours a day, every day of the week.
The CCTV will make it possible to monitor public and private property, main road junctions, shopping area and several points in downtown Faro, with the aim of reducing road traffic violations and to prevent crimes in 'known' high crime rate areas.
The system is also capable of capturing and recording audio “whenever there is a situation of concrete danger to the safety of people and property”.
For the mayor of Faro, Rogério Bacalhau, said that the award of the contract for the installation of the system “is the result of a long work” carried out in collaboration with the PSP, “reinforcing the feeling of security between residents and visitors” of the Faro municipality.
