TEMPERATURES COULD REACH 42 DEGREES FROM THURSDAYAccording to meteorologist Maria João Frada at the IPMA, temperatures will rise from Thursday, with maximums in the Tagus Valley and inland Alentejo and Algarve that could reach 42 degrees.

Speaking to Lusa news agency, the meteorologist from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere ( IPMA ) said that the rise in temperatures will be “very significantly” above average for the time of year, and are likely to continue at least until June 27th.

According to Maria João Frada, on Wednesday, the day on which summer officially begins, showers are still expected overnight in the North and Center regions of Portugal. The weather should improve in terms of cloudiness from the end of the morning.

“Then, we will have a hot weather situation. We'll move from mild temperatures to hot, to higher temperatures. The warmest areas will be the Tagus Valley and the interior of Alentejo and Algarve. In the rest of the country, temperatures should be just above 30 degrees ”, she said.

According to Maria João Frada, over the weekend, temperatures could reach 42 degrees in places south of the Tagus.

"We will also have a significant rise in the low temperatures. We'll have tropical nights, over 20 degrees, again south of the Tagus ”, she said.

Maria João Frada also highlighted that, following the hot weather, the danger of rural fires will increase to a very high and maximum level throughout the territory.
