On Monday night, an earthquake measuring 4.9 was recorded in northern Morocco and also had an impact in the Algarve, being felt in Albufeira, Faro, Loulé, Olhão and Silves.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USG ), the earthquake occurred at 10:48 pm, approximately 16 miles northeast of Alcácer Quibir, Morocco, at a depth of 10 kilometres. The epicentre was located in a region where seismic activity is relatively frequent, due to the proximity of the junction between the African and Eurasian tectonic plates.
On social media, especially on Facebook, several people from the Algarve region reported having felt the earthquake. Among the locations mentioned are Quarteira, Olhão and Faro, where some people said they had noticed vibrations in their homes, although they were short-lived. Reports indicate that the earthquake was felt moderately, without causing major concerns.
According to CNN Portugal, the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) also confirmed, via the social network X, that the tremor was felt in Portugal.
Despite its magnitude, an earthquake of this intensity rarely causes significant damage, especially when it occurs at a depth of 10 kms. However, seismic shocks in the region are closely monitored by authorities, since tectonic activity in the area can, in some cases, generate stronger tremors.
The IPMA continues to monitor the situation and reminds that Portugal is located in an area with some seismic activity, and it is always advisable to pay attention to safety instructions. In the event of a stronger earthquake, it is essential to know how to react, protecting yourself from falling objects and seeking shelter in safe places.
