A Ryanair passenger, determined not to pay extra fees for his 'oversized' hand luggage, destroyed his own suitcase in order to comply with the defined dimensions.
Daniel Galves, a young Spanish man, was flying from Palma de Mallorca International Airport in Spain when he was told his hand luggage case did not meet the regulated dimensions.
Adamant that he wasn't going to pay the 70 euros demanded by the airline Ryanair, to check in his bag, he removed the wheels from his suitcase to make it meet the carry-on baggage requirements, generating a wave of support from other onlooking travellers.
“I wasn’t going to pay”, said Daniel, who with the help of a friend, usedg his feet and knees to pull the wheels off his case there and then. Once done, he tested the suitcase on the measuring frame and confirmed that it now met the permitted dimensions for hand luggage.
The moment was recorded on video and shared on TikTok , where it quickly went viral, accumulating more than 715 thousand views. In the video, applause can be heard from other passengers, who celebrated the success of Galvez's strategy. Ryanair employees, visibly surprised, reacted with laughter and expressions of disbelief. Speaking to British newspaper The Sun , Daniel explained his decision in a pragmatic way: “I told Ryanair that my suitcase cost me 30 euros 10 years ago, and that I wasn't going to pay the 70 euros they were asking for, so I decided to break it ,” said the passenger.
In the comments on the video, many users praised the young man's attitude, highlighting the creativity of the solution.
