Suspects in the 2019 murder of the owner of a 'bolas de Berlim' cake factory in Albufeira begin their trial today.
The two men, aged 40 and 43, one of whom is in preventive detention, are accused of the crime of qualified homicide and will begin their trial by jury today, at Portimão court.
According to the Public Prosecutor's Office (MP), the murder occurred in September 2019, when the defendants entered the factory at night, attacking the 66 year old owner and causing his death by "external compression of the neck, " or strangulation.
The first suspect was not arrested until April 2024, the second shortly after. The Faro District Attorney's Office specified that the men had gone to the establishment with the intention of stealing money, but came across the businessman. The defendants allegedly tied the victim's hands and feet using adhesive tape known as mechanic's tape, “covered his mouth and then suffocated him.”
The men also allegedly stole 16,000 euros and several objects.
