One of the main monuments in the city of Lagos is becoming in such a state of disrepair, it is very likely that at least part of it will collapse. (VIDEO)
The Ponta da Bandeira Fort, also known as Pau da Bandeira Fort, Registro Fort or Nossa Senhora da Penha de França Fort, was built between 1680 and 1690 to defend access to the pier and the southeast and eastern flanks of the city wall. It protected Lagos from unwanted visitors many years ago, and remained standing and solid until a few years ago when cracks and holes began to appear, due to it being ravaged by the sea. Over time, with authorities not repairing the damage, these small holes grew and became a cave, with room for several people inside.
It is hard to conceive that a landmark monument would be treated in this way.
The wall connecting the monument was also severely affected and looks unstable. If, in the coming weeks, the wrath of the sea and the strength of the wind increase, it is very likely that at least part of it will collapse.
Over the years, there have been several voices raised against the lack of conservation work, and in March Parliament approved a document through which it recommends that the Government urgently intervene in this fort.
But, if it has not progressed up until now, with elections approaching it is doubtful that the central government will lift a finger to prevent the degradation from continuing.
Lagos City Council is preparing to take a step forward and, at the very least, put back the rocks that the sea has been knocking down. In principle, this could happen in May or June, it remains to be seen what damage the monument will suffer by then.
