The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) have warned worsening weather conditions today, beginning in the early hours of the morning in the south, then moving north until the entire country is under a yellow warning.
At 03:00 today, Faro and Beja will be under a yellow warning due to precipitation, and at 06:00 the regions of Setúbal and Lisbon will join, according to information made available today by IPMA, which points to periods of very cloudy skies and showers that could be heavy and even accompanied by thunderstorms.
Évora, Portalegre, Santarém, Leiria and Castelo Branco will be under yellow alert from 09:00. The rest of the country will be on yellow alert from 12:00, also due to the forecast of more rain.
Regarding the state of the sea, meteorologists predict westerly waves of 1.5 to 2 metres on the west coast north of Cape Carvoeiro and southwesterly waves of 2 to 3 metres on the west coast south of Cape Carvoeiro. On the south coast, forecasts are for southwest waves of 2 to 3 metres.
Given these forecasts, the captain recommends avoiding walks along the sea or in areas exposed to rough seas and that “close surveillance of vessels” be maintained.
“Do not engage in recreational fishing, especially near cliffs and cliff areas frequently hit by breaking waves, always bearing in mind that in these conditions the sea can easily reach apparently safe areas,” is another recommendation in the IPMA statement.
