The amount of water stored in barragens in the south of mainland Portugal increased again in April, compared to March, with only one basin in the country seeing a decrease in the amount of water retained.
According to data from the National Water Resources Information System (SNIRH), the amount of water retained by the Mira basin rose to 58.8% (57.9 at the end of March), the Barlavento to 60.9% (57.5) and the Arade to 87.4% (82.1).
According to the report, the amount of stored water increased in 11 river basins and decreased in one, the Tagus, from 97.3% to 96.1%.
Storages by river basin were higher than the April averages (1990/91 to 2023/24), except in the Mira and Ribeiras do Algarve basins.
Of the 60 monitored reservoirs, 51 have water availability greater than 80% of the total volume and only one has availability less than 40% of the total volume.
The Mondego and Guadiana basins had the largest volume of water with 99.5% and 97.4%, respectively, followed by the Oeste (96.6%), Tejo (96.1%), Lima (93.3%), Ave (91.3%), Douro (91%), Cávado (90.4%), Arade (87.4%) and Sado (84.1%).
