Four young people, aged between 15 and 18. were killed on Saturday night, when their car crashed on the EN 397, in Asseca, Tavira.
The victims are two Portuguese people aged 15 and 17 and two Germans aged 16 and 18.
According to reports, the Tesla car hit a tree and a road guardrail, and then fell into the Séqua River, upside down and partially submerged, which prevented the young people from escaping. The alert was given at 10:16pm.
All victims were removed from the vehicle, already dead, by emergency services. The road was closed to traffic until 1:40 am on Sunday.
The Colégio Santiago Internacional de Santiago, where three of the young people who died attended, has expressed its “absolute devastation” over what happened, asking for respect and privacy during the mourning period. The fourth victim was the brother of one of the students.
“The coming days and weeks will be immensely difficult for the families of the young people, as well as for their friends, teachers, assistants, and our entire school community in general,” said a source at the school, in a statement.
“We therefore ask for maximum privacy and respect during the grieving process as we mourn our loved ones, since all students who attend our school are minors,” the note reads.
According to a source from the GNR, the vehicle has been transported to the forensic medicine office at Faro Hospital. The GNR is investigating the circumstances of the accident, but newspaper reports indicate that the accident site is at a sharp bend, where "other serious accidents have already occurred".
