The Judicial Police arrested a 51 year old man in Olhão on Friday night, after he tried to kill his 42 year old wife in front of their young children.
According to a statement from the PJ, the woman was attacked in the family home, "allegedly for trivial reasons, using a sharp object, in the presence of her children aged 6 and 11".
Due to the severity of his injuries, police say the victim was taken to Faro Hospital, but subsequently transferred to the Santa Maria Hospital in Lisbon.
The suspect had left the scene, but was located around 12 hours after the incident by the National Republican Guard in the Olhão area, carrying "relevant evidence" which led to the man's arrest.
The detainee was brought before the judicial authorities and placed in preventive detention.
The investigation will be led by the Department of Investigation and Criminal Prosecution of Olhão.
