After a meeting of the Municipal Civil Protection Commission (CMPC), called by the mayor Álvaro Bila on Sunday, Portimão council has decided to reinforce prevention measures in light of the increased risk of rural fires.
Although it was decided “not to activate, for now, the Municipal Civil Protection Emergency Plan, considering that the conditions for an operational response are assured”, “several preventive and readiness measures” were reinforced.
The measures in question include "notifying the population via SMS, under the "Safe Village" and "Safe People" programs, the pre-positioning of combat resources and mobilization of tracked machines and the reinforcement of surveillance, early detection and awareness-raising actions, activating, among others, the use of drones."
Furthermore, it was decided to move forward with the “preparation of the Municipal Aerodrome as an Air Resources Center (CMA) to support air operations, the streamlining of the operationalization of the Population Concentration and Support Zones (ZCAP) (one is installed at the Júdice Fialho school), the mobilization of means of transport and logistical support and the reinforcement of the Civil Protection Agents staff”.
“The situation will be permanently monitored by the Operations and Communications Room (SALOC), with the possibility of immediately summoning the CMPC, if the activation of the Municipal Emergency Plan is justified”, says the municipality, which “appeals to the responsibility of all citizens”.
It should be noted that the Government has declared a state of alert across the entire mainland until Thursday, August 7, due to the increased risk of rural fires.
