The municipalities of Faro, Lisbon, Oeiras, Sintra, Tomar, Lagos and Olhão will be left without electricity on Sunday morning, between 5am and 11am, due to maintenance work on the power distribution network, the operator E-Redes announced on Thursday.
In a statement published on its website, E-Redes described the shutdowns as “scheduled and pre-arranged interruptions” aimed at “ensuring the quality and reliability of the electricity supply.”
“Maintaining the continuity and quality of power supply is E-Redes’ top priority. To achieve this, we carry out localised maintenance work on the distribution network, which sometimes requires temporarily interrupting the supply of electricity to customers,” the company explained.
The affected municipalities include Lisbon, Oeiras and Sintra (in the Lisbon district), Tomar (Santarém district), and Faro, Lagos and Olhão (Faro district).
In Lisbon, the power cut will impact the parish of Campolide, specifically on Avenida Conselheiro Fernando de Sousa and Rua Professor Sousa da Câmara, with the outage scheduled between 5am and 11am.
In Oeiras, electricity will be interrupted in the Union of Parishes of Algés, Linda-a-Velha and Cruz Quebrada-Dafundo, between 7am and 11am.
In Sintra, the works will affect the Union of Parishes of São João das Lampas and Terrugem from 6am to 11am, while in Tomar, the parishes of São João Batista and Santa Maria dos Olivais will be without power between 6am and 7am.
Further south, in the Algarve, cuts are planned in the parishes of Montenegro (Faro), Quelfes (Olhão) and São Gonçalo de Lagos (Lagos), between 7am and 11am.
“These interruptions allow for switching operations, connection work, repairs or maintenance of network infrastructure, whenever all alternative power supply options from existing installations have been exhausted,” E-Redes said.
According to the operator, the outages also serve “to correct situations that may compromise the safety of the electrical network and/or prevent future faults.”
This comes after news this week that 25,000 customers across Portugal had gone without electricity as a result of adverse weather, according to a statement from the national power distribution operator. E-redes said it expected to restore service swiftly as weather conditions improved throughout Wednesday aternoon.
E-Redes reported that it had mobilised 500 field workers to deliver a “robust and effective response” to widespread disruptions and outages affecting several parts of the country.
The company said it had activated alert status at 8pm on Tuesday in anticipation of severe weather conditions, including heavy rain and thunderstorms, which initially struck the northern Lisbon area overnight before moving inland towards the north of the country.
