The Hospital Particular do Algarve, in Faro, has carried out Portugal’s first robotic-assisted revision knee replacement surgery, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s orthopaedic innovation, in what is being described as a pioneering procedure in the field of orthopaedics.
The operation was carried out on Tuesday, 22 January, by the Orthopaedics Team at Faro’s Hospital Particular do Algarve (HPA) . It involved the replacement of a total knee prosthesis due to the persistence of pain following a previous arthroplasty.
According to the hospital group, the use of robotic technology in knee surgery has until now been largely associated with primary procedures. Its application in revision surgeries, which they state are technically more complex, represents a significant advance, requiring high levels of precision, detailed planning, and careful decision-making during the operation.
The team have reported that the robotic technology allows surgeons to access detailed, real-time information, supporting the assessment of knee alignment and the precise positioning of prosthetic components.
This approach “enhances surgical accuracy and may lead to improved functional outcomes, offering a more tailored response to the specific needs of each patient”, they say.
