The Judiciary Police (PJ) has arrested a 30-year-old man in Portimão on suspicion of attempted homicide, following a stabbing that left the victim in a life-threatening condition last month.
In a statement, police officers recounted that the suspect is accused not only of aggravated attempted homicide, but also possession of a prohibited weapon, in connection with a stabbing that occurred on the night of 17th December on a public street.
According to police, the incident took place during a physical altercation between two individuals. The victim, aged 29, intervened in an attempt to stop the violence, as one of those involved was a friend.
At that point, a third man, the suspect, appeared wielding a blade measuring approximately 15 centimetres that was concealed in his sleeve, then stabbing the victim in the back, striking deep enough to slash one of his kidneys.
Due to the seriousness of the injury, the victim was taken urgently to Portimão Hospital, where he was admitted in a critical condition, underwent emergency surgery, and was placed in an intensive care unit.
Investigative enquiries carried out by the PJ led to the identification of the suspect, who had fled to the north of the country, where he was eventually located and detained.
The detainee will be brought before a judicial authority for an initial hearing to determine coercive measures. The investigation is being led by the Portimão Public Prosecutor’s Office.
