A loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) rescued after being found stranded among rocks by a group of surfers on Mareta Beach, in Sagres, is recovering at Zoomarine’s rehabilitation centre.
According to Zoomarine, the animal “showed signs of dehydration and suspected pulmonary complications” when it was discovered by samaritans along the western Algarve coast.
Upon arrival at the park’s Porto d’Abrigo rehabilitation facility, the turtle underwent a series of examinations, including an overall health assessment, blood tests and X-rays.
The turtle, nicknamed Xena, “is recovering and showing positive progress under constant monitoring”.
Antonieta Nunes, the veterinary nurse responsible for the Porto d’Abrigo facility, said the animal required immediate attention. “When Xena arrived, we realised she needed urgent care. It is a delicate process that demands daily attention and considerable dedication from the team. Seeing each animal’s positive recovery reminds us why we do this work and reinforces the importance of acting quickly whenever an animal is found in distress,” she concluded.
