Portugal’s National Maritime Authority is assisting Spanish rescue teams in the search for a 58-year-old French national who went missing this weekend in the Guadiana River, which separates the Algarve from southern Spain.
Authorities believe the man fell on the Spanish bank of the river, south of the port of La Laja, in Huelva province, Andalusia. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain unknown.
The alert was raised at 7.10pm on Saturday, 14th February. As of Monday evening, searches are still ongoing.
Search operations were immediately launched by crew members from the Vila Real de Santo António Lifeboat Station on the Portuguese side of the river, alongside officers from the local Harbourmaster’s Office and Maritime Police command. They were joined by teams, including divers, from Huelva’s Maritime Lifeguard authority, supported by an aircraft.
The search was suspended at nightfall yesterday and today without the victim being located, and will resume tomorrow morning.
