Lagoa Municipal Council has begun a major refurbishment of the town’s Health Centre, in a project worth over €732,000, aimed at “improving the facility’s operating conditions and the quality of healthcare provided to residents”.
Planned works include the installation of lifts to ensure compliance with accessibility standards, the complete replacement of the fibre-cement roof with insulated sandwich panels, and upgrades to electrical systems, fire safety equipment, telecommunications, and ventilation.
Consultation rooms and interior areas will also be refurbished, including repainting and new flooring. Window and door frames will be replaced to improve thermal and energy efficiency, and solar panels will be installed to promote sustainability and reduce energy consumption.
A new metal structure will also be built to extend the covered area of the health centre, improving circulation and comfort for patients as a complementary intervention to the wider programme of works.
The project is fully funded by Portugal’s Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) as part of efforts to strengthen and modernise healthcare infrastructure, improving access, energy efficiency and sustainability in public buildings.
The contract has a completion deadline of 210 days and encompasses a broad range of structural and functional interventions focused on accessibility, safety, comfort and energy performance.
During the works, temporary containers-buildings and a tent have been installed in the adjacent car park, allowing the health centre to continue operating from provisional facilities.
Mayor Luís Encarnação said the refurbishment “represents an essential investment in improving conditions of care, safety and comfort, both for patients and healthcare professionals”.
“The municipality remains committed to enhancing its public facilities and providing a more efficient response to the needs of the population,” he added.
In parallel, Lagoa council is also working on refurbishing the municipality’s remaining health extensions, aiming to “ensure a more modern, accessible and equitable primary healthcare network across the entire territory”.
