The body of a 39-year-old German tourist was found having drowned on Monday, 23rd February, after getting into difficulty amidst strong waves and currents at Arrifana beach in Aljezur.
According to information gathered by newspaper Correio da Manhã, the victim had been surfing when he suddenly vanished out of sight for several minutes.
The captain of the Port of Lagos, Hugo da Guia, said the surfer was pulled from the water by a friend who was with him at the beach. Death was later confirmed by a doctor from Portugal’s National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM).
Multiple emergency resources from INEM and the Aljezur fire brigade were deployed and resuscitation attempts were carried out at the scene, to no success.
An INEM helicopter was dispatched and landed at Praia do Canal, where the medical team pronounced the man dead at the scene. The body has been transported to the medico-legal office at Portimão hospital.
