The A1 motorway has been closed in both directions between Albergaria and Aveiro Sul due to a wildfire that has mobilised around 150 emergency personnel and four helicopters, according to sources from motorway concessionaire Brisa, the GNR, and the Aveiro Sub-Regional Command.
In a post published on its official Facebook page, the Aveiro branch of the GNR warned motorists that the A1 had been shut because of an ongoing wildfire.
“All drivers are asked to avoid the area and use alternative routes, namely the A17/A25 or the EN235. Please drive with caution and always follow the instructions of the authorities on site,” the force said.
In a statement, Brisa confirmed that traffic has been suspended at kilometre 232, with vehicles being diverted at the Aveiro Sul junction. They thanked road users for their cooperation and understanding.
According to the website of the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC), as of 5.30pm on Tuesday, 31st March, the fire, burning in the parish of Eixo e Eirol, in Aveiro, involved 150 operational personnel supported by 45 vehicles and four helicopters.
A source from the Aveiro Sub-Regional Command said there were no homes at risk at this moment in time.
