Fishermen in the Algarve are set to hold two demonstrations this Saturday, April 25th, against the construction of a desalination plant close to Praia da Falésia, in Albufeira. The aforementioned protests are set to be held close to the proposed construction site.
The first action will be a march by sea, which will take place between 15:00 PM and 16:00 PM, with the participation of the fishermen’s boats. This arm of the demonstration is organized by QUARPESCA, the Association of Fishing Vessel Owners of Quarteira, and is open to all individuals who own a vessel and wish to participate, whether it be a professional fishing vessel, a recreational fishing vessel, or a boat for leisure or recreational purposes. The meeting point will be off the coast of Falésia.
In parallel, a pedestrian component will take place on the ground, starting at 16:00 PM, this side of the event is organized by the Baleeira Association, a sport fishing association based in Albufeira.
With these actions, the fishermen say they want to "raise awareness amongst public entities and political decision-makers about the need to ensure independent studies, effective mitigation measures, and the real involvement of affected communities in the decision-making process."
