Two men aged 26 and 27 were arrested on Wednesday, 22nd April, by Portugal’s Public Security Police (PSP) at Faro Airport on suspicion of document forgery as they prepared to board flights to Ireland.
The arrests took place in the outbound border control area during routine checks on the exit conditions of foreign nationals, the police said.
During passport authenticity and validity inspections, officers identified what they described as “strong indications of document fraud”.
Following the findings, officers from the Airport Security and Border Control Division detained the suspects as they were about to board flights bound for the Republic of Ireland.
The men have been formally charged and will appear before a court for the application of coercive measures.
As part of a permanent and stringent border control operation, the PSP said that 21 arrests have been made at Faro’s Gago Coutinho Airport since the start of the year. The force stressed that it maintains “a permanent and rigorous control system at air borders, combating the circulation of fraudulent documents and ensuring internal security”.
