A 57-year-old man has died after the rigid inflatable boat he was travelling in sank off Ponta de Sagres on Thursday, 23rd April.
According to Portugal’s National Maritime Authority (AMN), the alert was raised at around 17:10 local time. The victim was pulled from the water by crew members from the Sagres Lifeboat Station, assisted by a surfer who was nearby at the time.
Basic life support manoeuvres were carried out, but resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful and death was confirmed at the scene by a doctor from the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM).
“A second victim, a man aged around 50 and of Spanish nationality, managed to reach shore by his own means and did not require medical assistance,” the AMN said in a statement.
The vessel’s owner has been formally notified of the requirement to remove the boat, the authority added.
Responding to the incident were crews from the Sagres Lifeboat Stations, personnel from the Port Authority and the Lagos Local Command of the Maritime Police, firefighters from the Vila do Bispo Volunteer Fire Brigade, and an INEM aircraft, the AMN said. The Maritime Police’s psychological support unit was also activated, in order to provide aid to the sole survivor.
